Carrier Independence Sails Into Yokosuka

YOKOSUKA, Japan —
The U.S. aircraft carrier Independence sailed into its new home port here Wednesday, opposed by hundreds of anti-nuclear demonstrators at a nearby park.
The Independence and its crew of 5,179 replace the Midway as the only U.S. carrier based overseas and the hub of the U.S. naval presence in Asia.
