Catholicism Lacks Defenders of the Faith

Share

It was with a sad realization that I read your article. As a Catholic, I have often questioned the fairness of my religion. Yet, though I am non-practicing, Catholicism is still the faith by which I was raised and taught to worship God.

I am filled then with a deep sense of shame and regret when I hear disparagements about my faith, because I cannot ably defend it. It is the Catholics, such as myself, who are torn between protecting their cultural heritage and promoting their own political beliefs, who are responsible for incurring the bigotry Amy Kuebelbeck mentions in her article.

Because of our fear of being perceived as inappropriately conservative and socially backward, we do not vociferously defend our faith against its attackers, thereby leaving Catholicism and its true adherents vulnerable to intolerance and bias.
