Seeking to recover the remains of its troops buried alive by U.S. forces in the Persian Gulf War, Iraq appealed to the world to condemn “this odious crime,” Foreign Minister Ahmed Hussein Khudayer said Sunday.

In a statement carried by the official Iraqi News Agency, Khudayer said the ruthless killers who buried the troops in their trenches should be “eternally cursed.”

Last Thursday, the U.S. Defense Department confirmed reports that American tanks fitted with plows buried Iraqi troops alive in trenches in a key assault during the final days of the war.

Once the trenches are located, Iraq will request the return of the victims’ remains as soon as possible, Khudayer said. He said his ministry has drawn up urgent messages to international organizations, urging them to “condemn this odious crime and expose its dimensions and motives.”

“The ministry will demand from the International Committee of the Red Cross and the U.S. government full information on military positions subjected to the cowardly crime of extermination committed by American forces,” he added.

Khudayer said Iraq would also send the messages to the Arab League and the United Nations.
