UPI Begins Layoffs: United Press International began a new round of layoffs aimed at keeping the financially troubled news service in business. Spokesman Milt Capps would not disclose how many employees were getting layoff notices, but he said the organization was sticking with its plan to lay off about 150 employees, including about 15 management employees, within the next month or two. Capps said the layoffs involved employees across the country, including those working in Los Angeles, New York, Washington and smaller bureaus. He said some of these layoffs may not be carried out until later this week.
