Having read the detailed interview with Barbara Jordan in your report and listening to the confirmation hearings of Judge Clarence Thomas, I believe that we would all benefit if President Bush retracted Thomas’ nomination now and in his place nominated Barbara Jordan. Such a change would be fulfilling a number of implicit quotas: an African-American for Justice Thurgood Marshall’s seat, a woman and a extremely rare person of high intelligence and humane vision.
