Oxy Unit Cuts Work Force by 18%: Occidental Petroleum Corp. said it cut 174 salaried jobs at its Island Creek Corp. coal subsidiary in Lexington, Ky. The cuts came through a voluntary early retirement program and layoffs in response to a soft market for the company’s coal, officials said. Occidental has been undergoing a drastic restructuring aimed at selling off non-strategic assets to reduce debt and focus the company on its core oil, gas and chemical businesses.
