Amtrak’s San Diegan, a passenger train that runs between Santa Barbara and San Diego, soon will make stops in Ventura.

The Ventura County Fair Board on Tuesday approved an agreement that provides 44 parking spaces in the fairgrounds parking lot for people using a train platform to be built next to the fairgrounds on Harbor Boulevard, west of Figueroa Street in Ventura.

David Valeska, project manager for the city of Ventura, said construction on the platform is scheduled to begin Monday. The plans call for a 500-foot-long platform that is 12 feet wide and has a 40-foot-long passenger shelter.

Construction is expected to be finished in six weeks, he said, and trains may begin stopping in Ventura by early November.

He said southbound trains will stop in Ventura about 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., with northbound stops at 10 a.m. and 9:45 p.m.

A round-trip ticket from Ventura to Los Angeles would cost about $20, he said. Amtrak buses providing connecting service also will use the platform.
