A former Nazi SS concentration camp guard who was serving a life prison term for torturing Gypsies to death at Auschwitz has been found dead, hanging from an electrical cable in his prison cell, authorities said.

Ernst-August Koenig, 72, found Wednesday, apparently hanged himself, said a spokesman for the North Rhine-Westphalia state Justice Ministry.

Koenig was convicted in January of killing three inmates in the Gypsy section of the Auschwitz camp in 1943. In a trial that lasted 176 days, he was accused of torturing the inmates to death.
