Thorns in This ‘Rose’

Your article on the making of “Rambling Rose” contained statements by Coolidge and star Laura Dern that hurt the chances for women to direct movies.

Gender should have nothing to do with the choice of director. Wise women should not reveal bias if they expect to be selected without bias.

Coolidge tells Honeycutt: “As a woman directing this piece I was particularly sensitive to making sure the women were well-rounded characters.” Don’t let her direct Westerns or war stories or male-dominated movies!

Dern was even more endangering to the future of women directors when she stated: “ . . . It was a plus to have a woman (director) to deal with a central character who is misinterpreted on the basis of her sexuality.”

It’s time to cut out the stereotypes.
