Appeal in Laura Small Case Opposed

Share

I have just read the article regarding Laura Small’s judgment involving the mountain lion mauling of the little girl in Caspers Park (“County to Appeal Award to Girl Who Was Mauled,” Sept. 18). I find it difficult to believe that the County Board of Supervisors wants to appeal the court’s decision.

The county had an obligation to issue warnings regarding the dangers involved. The park rangers should have made the public aware. Haven’t this child and her family been through enough? Instead of trying to put this behind them and heal from the trauma and adjust their lives, the supervisors want them to endure it all over again. As representatives of the county, part of the supervisors’ work is to acknowledge responsibility for negligence. How much additional money is an appeal going to cost the county?

Perhaps the Small family can get an even bigger settlement than previously awarded to compensate them for the additional trauma involved in enduring another trial. They deserve it!

The little girl indicated she’d use the money for college. At this rate, she’ll be well beyond college age by the time she gets the settlement.
