TACLOBAN, Philippines —
Communist rebels ambushed and killed a town mayor and six other people Saturday in the central Philippines, police said.
Mayor Pio Enciso of Lawaan in Eastern Samar province, his wife and five other companions were in a police car driving to nearby Balingaga when guerrillas hiding in bushes reportedly opened fire on them.
The New People’s Army guerrillas ran to a nearby forest after the attack, one of a series launched by the Communists less than a week after they ended a unilateral cease-fire.
