Sun Introduces Minicomputers: Sun Microsystems Inc., known for powerful desktop computers sold to scientists and engineers, introduced machines meant to replace what it called the “dinosaur” minicomputers used by many commercial companies. The debut marks a major weapon Sun is deploying to capture part of the computer business that has eluded it. Although enormously successful at building workstations, the desktop machines that resemble powerful personal computers, that market has appealed largely to academics and researchers. The new Sun Sparcserver 600MP systems cost $45,000 to $104,500.
