Amnesty International Team Returns to London
A team of Amnesty International investigators returned to London after a weeklong probe of brutality complaints against the Los Angeles police and sheriff’s departments.
The three representatives of the human rights group found enough evidence to warrant further review from the agency’s headquarters, a spokeswoman said. They will use documents mailed by civil rights attorneys, said Anita Tiessen, a spokeswoman for the team. Some “credible people” have alleged and denied that there is systematic brutality in the Police Department and county Sheriff’s Department, Tiessen said.
On Friday, the team capped a five-day stay by interviewing police commissioners Stanley Sheinbaum and Jesse Brewer and attorneys representing clients in brutality cases. The team interviewed 40 people, including Police Chief Daryl F. Gates, Sheriff Sherman Block and Mayor Tom Bradley.
