Censored Words

Share

The Times always talks about the public’s “right to know,” but it doesn’t back it up in policy. In your article on the suit against Los Angeles Police Chief Daryl Gates’ and the appeal (Metro, Sept. 28) you note a “highly unusual move” in which appeals court judges quoted a police officer using “obscene language.” You then give us an example, and censor the “obscenity,” making us guess what the judge quoted the officer as saying. If I wanted to guess what the news was, I wouldn’t have to buy a newspaper, would I?

When are the editors of The Times going to grow up and stop fixating on bad words, and simply report the news?
