WORLD IN BRIEF : AFGHANISTAN : Moscow Offer to Rebels Reported

Afghan rebel leaders said that Soviet Foreign Minister Boris D. Pankin offered to stop supporting Afghan President Najibullah to help bring peace to Afghanistan. Pankin acknowledged talking with the guerrilla leaders at the United Nations but denied that he made any proposals. He said he reiterated the U.S. and Soviet pledge to stop arms deliveries to the Afghan factions by the end of the year and mentioned a “period of transition” before free elections.
