A school board member who said Laker Magic Johnson was a “big, dumb black kid” while growing up in Lansing, Mich., resigned as the panel’s treasurer, but not from the board. Johnson, a Lansing native who attended Everett High School and nearby Michigan State, called for William Carter’s apology, and resignation or ouster. Carter apologized to Johnson.
Board President Nancy Erickson said Carter stepped down as treasurer after learning the board would probably oust him from the post.
