Ramona
The son of an elderly Ramona woman pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity Wednesday to murdering his mother last year.
Lorne Schultz, 47, entered the plea before San Diego Superior Court Judge Allan Preckel, who rescheduled Schultz’s trial for Jan. 8.
Schultz is charged with murdering Mayme Schultz, 72, who is believed to have been slain Dec. 29 in her home in the San Diego Country Estates area of Ramona.
Her body was found Jan. 15 in rural Mississippi, and her son was arrested Jan. 28 in Biloxi, Miss., while driving her car. Police believe Schultz carried the body in the trunk of the car before disposing of it.
Preckel appointed psychiatrists to evaluate Schultz and vacated a trial date of Oct. 29.
