World IN BRIEF : ZAIRE : New Leaders Backed by Belgian Troops

Zaire’s first opposition-led government took power, and Belgium offered to keep its 800 paratroopers there as long as Prime Minister Etienne Tshisekedi wants them. Tshisekedi has asked the Belgians to stay, fearing that if they leave there could be factional violence in the huge country of 33 million people.
