Abortion Anecdotes and the Law

Share

Of all the arguments for abortion, the one Carol Tavris (“Anecdotes: Coat Hangers of Truth,” Commentary, Oct. 7), as well as NOW and others, uses is the weakest--that we should keep abortions legal because it will prevent illegal abortions. She does not address the problem of whether or not it is moral for a nation to underwrite the elimination of its unwanted citizens.

It is just the opposite of the position we endorse in regard to dangerous drugs. We know that it is an assault on people’s bodies and minds to use these substances, so we make them illegal, knowing that many will be driven to use them anyway.

In making this elimination of human life a part of its agenda, the women’s movement has made an enormous mistake.
