On his caddie’s advice, Paul Azinger turned this year’s Walt Disney World Golf Classic into a three-day tournament.

Azinger fell seven shots behind in the opening round when he finished with a par 72.

“My caddie (Billy Poore) asked me yesterday if I had three 66s in me, and that changed my whole outlook,” said Azinger, who had 65s the next two rounds and has a one-stroke lead going into today’s final 18 holes at Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

“We just turned it into a three-day tournament,” he said.

Azinger had seven birdies in a bogey-free round Friday to push his three-round total 14 shots below par at 202.

A dozen players were within four shots of Azinger going into the final round in quest of the $180,000 winner’s purse.

David Peoples, Davis Love III, Steve Elkington and Mark O’Meara were at 203.

Defending champion Lee Trevino and Charles Coody shot five-under-par 67s to share the first-round lead in the Transamerica Senior tournament at Napa, Calif.

Bob Charles was one stroke behind entering today’s second round in the 54-hole tournament over the 6,630-yard Silverado Country Club south course.

Arnold Palmer and Gary Player led a group of eight players at 69. Tommy Aaron, DeWitt Weaver, Gibby Gilbert, Bruce Crampton, Simon Hobday and Dick Hendrickson were in the group.

American Billy Andrade defeated defending champion Ian Woosnam, 7 and 6, in the quarterfinals of the World Match Play tournament at Virginia Water, England.
