GE Engine Unit to Cut 1,500 Jobs: General Electric Aircraft Engines of Evendale, Ohio, said it will eliminate 1,500 jobs by the end of 1992 to cut costs by $450 million. “Due to a softened commercial airline market and a shrinking defense budget, our customers are more focused than ever on lower costs,” Senior Vice President Brian Rowe said. GE Aircraft Engines and Pratt & Whitney are the primary producers of military aircraft engines. GE serves the international commercial jet market in partnership with SNECMA of France, FiatAvio of Italy and IHI of Japan. It employs about 34,300 people nationwide, about half in the Cincinnati area.
