A Drug Awareness and Resistance Education Program will start in La Verne schools next year, the Police Department said Tuesday.
The City Council voted Monday to establish the D.A.R.E. program after police found a way to pay for the program, which costs about $75,000 a year. A police officer in an administrative position will be transferred to the D.A.R.E. program and will be replaced with someone who is not a sworn officer, officials said.
Other funds will come from the Narcotics Asset Forfeitures account, money the city has obtained through drug-related arrests, and community fund-raising efforts.
The program will focus on the city’s five elementary schools but will also conduct programs at Ramona Middle School and Bonita High School, police said.
