Texas Killings and Gun Control

Share

The column by Sarah Brady (Commentary, Oct. 23) is a concern to me. As a believer in the Constitution, I know she has a right to her freedom of expression. I also believe in the Second Amendment.

Mrs. Brady stated that the 247 members of the House who voted against the recent omnibus crime bill were “cowards” for doing so. Since when is it cowardly to support the Constitution? She also laments that the killers in the Stockton, Louisville and Killeen shootings killed themselves. Mrs. Brady asks, “Whom can we punish?”

It is common citizens, like myself, that you are trying to punish, Mrs. Brady. Because criminals do not pay attention to laws, they will not abide by any of the gun-control measures that you advocate. Only law-abiding citizens do.

Before you label me as a right-wing NRA member, let me tell you about myself. I am a longtime moderate Democrat, I am not an NRA member and I believe that in California we have a good set of regulations concerning gun ownership. I also believe that the “assault weapon ban” has done nothing to stop the gang and drug violence in this state. Ask the street cop, he will tell you the same thing. So please, stop trying to punish me.
