First came temporary Christmas tree lots and then part-time pumpkin patches. The latest in seasonal businesses is selling Halloween costumes.

One Halloween costume shop has popped up in a former children’s apparel store in the Harbor McFadden Center on Harbor Boulevard in Santa Ana. Since the store is open only for a few short weeks before trick-or-treat time, the store is sans hangers and racks. Hundreds of costumes are laid out on the floor, ranging in price from $17 for ghosts and goblins apparel to a $120 Southern belle dress.

Sales have been pretty good, the staff reports, both retail and selling wholesale to other shops.

“This may be a temporary business, but it’s very lucrative when it’s done in a tasteful, right way,” Leo Durden, assistant manager, said.

Customers say they are impressed with the selection. “This is one of the largest places, and the costumes are nicer,” said Susie Lieberman of Tustin as she bought a pair of Ninja turtle outfits, complete with swords, for her 7- and 8-year-old sons.
