The Simi Valley City Council has unanimously approved an affirmative action plan that officials hope will encourage minorities and women to apply for city jobs.

The new plan approved Monday calls for the city to hire 33 minority and women workers during the next five years, said Laura Herron, city personnel and budget administrator.

Currently, 80% of the city’s 490 full-time employees are white and 54% are white men. In addition, slightly more than 70% of the city’s 18 top administrators are white men. The city’s population of 102,000 is 80% white.

“I think we’ve been making some progress over the years,” Herron said of the hiring of minorities and women. “But like every organization, there’s room for improvement.”

A progress report on the new hiring plan will be presented to the council in December, followed by annual reports, Herron said.
