With 22% of its population senior citizens, La Mirada is launching a Senior Recognition Program to pay tribute to residents on their 80th, 90th and 100th birthdays. Seniors will be honored at City Council meetings, with the first celebration scheduled Nov. 12 for Ross Young, who had his 100th birthday on Oct. 27.

Young, who has lived in the city for more than 20 years, will receive a wine carafe bearing the city seal and mounted on a wooden base with a plaque saying “you have enriched our community by your presence.” Young is the father of artist Cy Young, who chairs the city Senior Citizens Commission.

Anyone wishing to nominate people for milestone birthday honors may go to City Hall or call the senior services coordinator at 943-0131, ext. 237. Honorees will receive greeting cards from the council at 80, framed certificates at 90 and special gifts at 100.
