Whittier : Ban on Adult Businesses Extended for Nearly a Year

Share

City officials know of no adult business that has plans to open in Whittier, but they are not taking any chances. The City Council has voted unanimously to extend until next September a moratorium on the establishment of adult businesses, such as massage parlors and over-21 theaters and bookstores.

The moratorium will give officials time to update city laws on adult businesses, Planning Director Elvin Porter said. Recent court decisions could give the city greater power to regulate or prohibit new adult businesses. Officials said they do not want such enterprises to take advantage of existing regulations in the meantime.

The city passed a 45-day moratorium Sept. 10, but that did not give staff enough time to revise the regulations.
