Tribute Nets $150,000 for Cancer Research

American Cancer Society presented its Allan K. Jonas Life Achievement Award to Burt Reynolds and Loni Anderson at its Tribute Dinner Oct. 16 at the Century Plaza. The evening’s net proceeds of $150,000 will be used for cancer research, preventive education and service to cancer patients and their families. Ron Weisner, president of the society’s Entertainment League, was volunteer chair.

* Deaf West Theatre will receive $50,000, proceeds from a pre-Halloween party Oct. 26 at the home of Carolyn and Joseph Sargent. The theater will produce plays in sign language, and is committed to using and training deaf writers, directors, actors and technicians.

* American Film Institute’s Gary Hendler Minority Filmmakers Program and the Los Angeles Urban League will share more than $75,000 raised at the Oct. 21 premiere of “House Party 2” at Century City’s Cineplex Odeon Theater. New Line Cinema hosted the event.

Pacific Asia Museum netted more than $169,000 at its 14th annual Festival of the Autumn Moon open house and silent auction Sept. 22 and its gala dinner and fine art auction Oct. 5. Jackie Galperson chaired the festival; Nancy Davis chaired the gala. Proceeds benefit the museum.

* Homestead Hospice & Shelter’s “Building With Friends” party Oct. 13 at Hollyhock House raised more than $16,000. Proceeds will be used for services for AIDS patients.

* TRIPOD, an educational program for hearing-impaired individuals and their families, received a $45,000 grant from the Ahmanson Foundation on Oct. 10. Funds will be used for classroom renovation and new construction at its preschool in Burbank.

* Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the receipt of pledges totaling $250,000 for the Center for Motion Picture Study. Included in those pledges are $50,000 each from Ann-Margret, Alan Ladd Jr. and Bette Midler. The center’s grand staircase will be named in honor of Anne and Kirk Douglas for their $100,000 contribution.

* Lupus Foundation of America Inc. raised $225,000 at its Oct. 10 gala. Among the honorees at the Beverly Hilton was Dr. Daniel Wallace for his research and work with lupus patients. Major sponsors were Interscope, Amblin Entertainment, Time-Warner, Curb Records, ICM, NBC-TV, C. B. Commercial and Mortgage Capital Group. Proceeds will be used for research, education and service programs. Honorary chairs were Jeramie Dreyfuss and Linda and Bobby Hatfield.

* Hollywood Sunset Community Clinic has announced the receipt of a $66,000 grant from the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services AIDS Programs to provide bilingual support groups for HIV-infected gay and bisexual Latino men. The support groups will be administered by the clinic’s counseling department and its Cara a Cara Latino AIDS Project.

* San Fernando Valley Child Guidance Clinic received a $5,000 grant Sept. 19 from Target stores to be used for two classes for Spanish-speaking parents. The classes, titled “Hugs ‘N’ Kids, Parenting Your Preschoolers,” will be given at elementary schools.

* The Los Angeles Philharmonic has received more than $100,000 from its International Committee to support its many activities. The proceeds were raised over the summer by the International Committee, which held its 1991 Festival Fly-Away at the Hollywood Bowl. Committee president Maria Uribe was acting chair of the annual fund-raising event.
