She Shoulda Stood in Bed: The Princess of Wales probably wishes she had stayed home after the rocky ending to a visit to Ontario, Canada. The Canadian Museum of Nature said in a news release that the “Princess of Whales” had visited. And before Diana toured a new heart clinic, officials thought they had too many empty beds--so they filled the clinic by calling in former patients.
First Things First: A Georgia man who was pinned for three days in his overturned car in a ditch in Blakely, Ga., wanted to know one thing when he was rescued--Florida’s winning lottery numbers. Freddie Johnson was on his way back from Florida after buying tickets to the state’s $89.9-million lottery jackpot when he fell asleep at the wheel. A farmer found him Sunday, one day after the drawing, and he was in stable condition Thursday in a hospital. Aside from his injuries, Johnson has another setback: He lost in the lottery.
New View: English writer T. S. Eliot’s image as cold and severe may not long survive. A London attic’s recently discovered hoard of letters and poems to his goddaughter shows him as gentle and caring. Titles of two of the fun poems: “Mr. Pugstyles: The Elegant Pig” and “How to Pick a Possum.” After seeing the collection, one library curator said: “His playful, affectionate tone . . . adds a new dimension to the general perception of him as an austere figure.”
Sign Up: The only way you can get a New York City street sign is to steal it, right? No more. By mail-order and for as little as $25, you can buy a regulation, heavy-gauge aluminum sign reading “42nd Street,” “Wall Street” or any one of 7,000 other names--or you can order one with your own name. “You thought the pet rock was big. Wait till you see this,” says a department of transportation spokesman.
