Joint Japan-U.S. Aircraft May Be Canceled: Aviation Week magazine reported that Japan’s national defense agency is quietly considering cancellation of plans to produce the next-generation FS-X combat aircraft. The project--which has been the source of friction between the United States and Japan--is said to have doubled in cost from the original $1.27-billion estimate. Some officials in Japan are reportedly upset at demands that a production line be set up at General Dynamics’ Ft. Worth division. The jet is based on the General Dynamics F-16.
