MOORPARK : Hearings Begin on Growth of City

Share

About 60 Moorpark residents and a handful of developers attended the opening public hearing Monday on the city’s future growth.

The Moorpark Planning Commission is considering whether the city should more than double its size from 12.3 square miles to 30.7 square miles in the next 15 to 20 years. Most of the land that would be added is now vacant. But several developers have submitted plans to build about 5,500 houses and apartments on land within the area being studied.

Most of the new development would be in the hills north of the city. A concern of planning commissioners and many residents at the hearing was the way the hillside developments would look. In addition, commissioners expressed concern about where they could build the roads and highways that would be needed as Moorpark grows.

The hearing also addressed a set of proposed zoning changes within the current city limits. The changes would allow about 2,000 more residences to be built, in addition to commercial and industrial buildings.

Together, the developments proposed in the city and within the proposed expansion area would double the amount of housing in Moorpark.

The Planning Commission will hold at least one more public hearing before making recommendations to the City Council on the proposed boundary and zoning changes. The next hearing will be Nov. 18.
