Duke Courts Latino Voters in Radio Speech
Louisiana gubernatorial candidate David Duke’s efforts to distance himself from his racist past included a radio pitch to Latinos on Monday. His opponent gained another prominent backer who predicted statewide economic repercussions if Duke wins.
“We cannot afford to elect a Ku Kluxer,” said retired Sen. Russell B. Long, appearing with former Gov. Edwin W. Edwards, who faces Duke in a runoff on Nov. 16.
Long echoed other supporters, and former Edwards opponents who now back the former governor, who have said the state would lose many conventions and other money-making events should Duke be elected governor.
In the Latino radio show, Duke said Christianity had softened his racist views. He promises no new taxes, welfare reform and an end to race-based affirmative action.
“I still believe in the preservation of Western civilization,” Duke said.
