Apple Seeks to Reverse a Tariff: Apple Computer Inc. asked the Court of International Trade to reverse a tariff on imported computer displays from Japan. Apple uses the displays in its Macintosh PowerBook 170 notebook computer. The Commerce Department ruled in July that manufacturers of flat panel displays were selling their products in the United States at less than fair market value. It recommended dumping margins of 62.63% on foreign makers of active matrix liquid crystal displays. The tariff was imposed in August after an International Trade Commission ruling. There is no viable U.S. flat panel display industry, Apple argued to the Commerce Department. If dumping margins were imposed, it said, U.S. computer manufacturers would be at a disadvantage against foreign competitors.
