State Wineries Awash in Grapes: California wineries have had one of the best grape harvests on record. “No real hard numbers are out yet, but it was a giant crop,” said Jon Fredrikson of Gomberg, Fredrikson Associates, a San Francisco consulting firm. What began as a questionable year because of a dangerous winter freeze, followed by a cool summer, has ended with tanks at the state’s 475 wineries overflowing. Vintners say the quality of the grapes is exceptionally high. Consumers should benefit from the glut because prices are apt to be lower.
