Japanese Firms May Form HDTV Group: Three Japanese semiconductor makers said they are negotiating to form a research consortium to develop computer chips for high-definition television. NEC Corp., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. and Mitsubishi Electric Corp. also said they are considering U.S. partners. The companies said a Japanese-U.S. research consortium would help them compete with a consortium formed in August by Hitachi Ltd., Sony Corp., Fujitsu Ltd. and Texas Instruments Inc.
