Glendale : Change of District Sought

Share

A group of La Canada Flintridge residents who live within six-tenths of a square mile that is part of the Glendale Unified School District have asked the school board to allow them to join another district.

Seven people calling themselves the Sagebrush Committee asked the board on Tuesday to transfer the residential neighborhood, home to 600 families, to the La Canada Unified School District by the start of the 1992-93 school year.

By unifying city and school district boundaries, the residents hope to improve local control over educational matters, strengthen community identity and balance student populations in the neighboring cities.

“We’re in a town that we’re not really a part of,” said James Graf, a Sagebrush Committee spokesman. “We feel the community is split and want to unify it.”

Graf, who asked the board to consider the proposal at its next meeting, said annexing the area to the La Canada district could increase student population in the district by 5% while decreasing enrollment of Glendale schools by less than 1%.

Board members expressed reservations and did not commit to further discussion of the proposal. Glendale Supt. Robert Sanchis said the district could lose nearly $600,000 in state funds by agreeing to the transfer.
