Outrageous is the only word I can find to describe Gallegly’s proposed constitutional amendment to deny U.S. citizenship to children born in this country whose mothers are not legal residents.
This nation has a history of welcoming and assimilating immigrants into its borders. House Joint Resolution 357 and House Resolution 3605 are repressive and discriminatory. I am appalled by his efforts to promote racial polarization. He is attempting to single out people of color.
Throughout this city, we are fighting to promote greater cultural awareness and understanding so that the Jordan Downses or Rodney Kings no longer monopolize the news. Our priority must be promoting human relations on a local as well as national level.
