Torrance Council OKs Hotel Site

After rejecting two separate development projects in recent weeks, the Torrance City Council on Tuesday finally met a proposal it liked.

By a vote of 5 to 2, the council approved plans for a 71-unit hotel and six residential lots at 1984 Artesia Blvd. B & V Associates of Rancho Palos Verdes will build the hotel on Artesia Boulevard, and the six houses will be constructed on the southern boundary of the property near 176th Street.

Banarsi L. Agarwal, a partner in the firm, said the hotel will be affiliated with Choice Hotels International.

The council amended its general land-use plan and the area’s zoning to permit construction of a hotel and houses on the site.

The developer originally proposed a 102-unit hotel at the site, but altered its size and design after the council and Planning Commission raised concerns that the project was too large for the property.

The council previously rejected another hotel project because it was too large for its proposed site and a car dealership because it was incompatible with the council’s plans for the property.
