SCORECARD : Meals Programs to Share $300,000

St. Vincent Meals on Wheels, the Los Angeles Department of Aging and West Los Angeles Meals on Wheels will share more than $300,000 raised Sept. 29 at the annual American Wine & Food Festival. The gala, held at the Universal Studios Western set, was organized by Wolfgang Puck, Vincent Price and the Wolfgang Puck Charitable Foundation. It was sponsored by Martell Cognac, Finlandia Vodka, Piper Sonoma Sparkling Wine, San Pelligrino Sparkling Water, S. E. Rykoff and others.

* American Diabetes Assn. Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diseases will reap the benefits of a check donated Oct. 23 by Escada chairman Wolfgang Ley and his wife, Margaretha. The couple also underwrote an opening gala held Oct. 23 at the new Escada boutique, attended by 500 guests and chaired by Barbara Davis and her daughter, Nancy Zarif.

* China Disaster Relief Fund will receive $20,000 from Sylvia Wu to benefit flood victims in China. The proceeds were raised at a dinner Wu underwrote Sept. 30 at Madame Wu’s Garden in Santa Monica.

* Armory Center for the Arts’ first benefit, held Sept. 29 at its facility in Old Town Pasadena, was attended by more than 250 guests and raised more than $20,000. Proceeds will be used for art education programs in lower-income neighborhoods and in schools.

* St. Joseph Center will receive $25,000 to continue its work in serving economically disadvantaged and homeless people in the Venice area. The funds were raised at a benefit Oct. 29 at Il Cielo in Beverly Hills. Hosts were Cecelia and Clifford Waeschle, Rick Merrill, president of Prudential California Realty and Joyce Rey.

* The Salvation Army Family Feeding Program received more than 35,000 cans of food donated by theater patrons who attended the Shakespeare Festival/LA. Vons matched the canned items on a two-for-one basis, a donation worth $100,000.

* Los Angeles Shanti Foundation received a $48,000 community development block grant, awarded at an Oct. 18 foundation meeting. The grant will fund emotional support services for those affected by HIV, AIDS and other life-threatening illnesses.

* Hollenbeck Youth Center will receive $40,000, net proceeds from the Hollenbeck/Alatorre Inner-City Games held over the summer. The money will be used for such youth programs as Recreation on Wheels (transportation to and from the recreation center to avoid conflicts with gangs), Youth Advocacy Programs, Good Friends Club (which brings youth and senior citizens together) and the inner-city games. Daniel L. Hernandez has been executive director since 1980.

* Pediatric & Family Medical Center announced on Oct. 3 the receipt of an $11,800 grant from the Edwin A. and Betty B. Tomlin Trust. The grant will be used to provide medical and dental services to children and adults and to provide child care and early intervention programs to needy families in the Central Los Angeles community.

* Casa Colina Centers for Rehabilitation Foundation’s annual Business and Professional Leaders’ Forum, held Sept. 24 at the Industry Hills Sheraton and Resort, netted $31,000. The centers provide medical and rehabilitation services for children and adults disabled by injury or illness.
