Defense Rests in Keating Trial: The lawyer for Charles H. Keating Jr. rested his case, as expected, without calling any defense witnesses. Lawyer Stephen C. Neal told jurors that the prosecution has “fallen far short” in proving that Keating defrauded small investors who bought his company’s bonds at the Southern California branches of Lincoln Savings & Loan. Investors lost their money after Lincoln and its parent company collapsed in April, 1989. Under questioning by Superior Court Judge Lance A. Ito outside the presence of the jury, Keating said he discussed the unusual strategy with Neal “fully and completely” and intended to follow “his excellent advice.” Ito scheduled the start of final arguments for 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
