Nissan to Boost U.S. Parts Purchases: In the face of growing protectionist sentiment in Washington, Japan’s No. 2 auto maker said it plans to increase its purchases from U.S. auto parts suppliers by 1994 to $3.3 billion, about 40% above the projected 1992 level. The number includes parts to be used in assembling vehicles at Nissan’s Smyrna, Tenn., assembly plant and those imported for use in Japanese-built vehicles. Nissan President Yutaka Kume made the announcement at the opening of the company’s new $80-million research and development center in Farmington Hills, Mich. The new facility, which will employ nearly 500 people, was designed to enable Nissan to develop vehicles aimed specifically at U.S. consumers, the company said.
