NATION IN BRIEF : TEXAS : Gun Deaths Found to Exceed Car Fatalities

Texas is the only state where deaths from guns outnumber deaths from injuries sustained in automobile accidents, a medical research team found in a study. The team said it based its conclusion on a review of death certificates from 1985 to 1990, and said that while its study of 1991 is incomplete, the trend is accelerating this year. The study, published in this month’s issue of Texas Medicine, the magazine of the Texas Medical Assn., pointed to record murder rates set in each of the last two years in Houston and Dallas and to last month’s shooting rampage in Killeen.
