From Staff and Wire Reports

The NHL suspended right wing Gaetan Duchesne of the Minnesota North Stars for four games without pay Friday because he swung his stick at defenseman Chris Chelios of the Chicago Blackhawks during a Nov. 3 game.

Brian O’Neill, NHL executive vice president, made his decision after a hearing in Toronto. O’Neill said it appeared that Duchesne retaliated for a couple of bodychecks by Chelios earlier in the game. Duchesne’s stick struck the Blackhawk player’s helmet.

The suspension takes effect next Friday unless the North Stars waive the period of appeal within 24 hours of the decision.
