The breakaway Yugoslav and Soviet republics have asked permission to compete on the World Cup ski racing circuit as national teams.
International Ski Federation Secretary-General Gian-Franco Kasper said the organization’s council meeting Sunday is expected to approve membership bids by newly independent Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.
But he said the outcome of discussions on the Yugoslav republic of Slovenia was more uncertain. He said applications from the ski federations in neighboring Croatia and in the Soviet republics of Ukraine and Georgia had politicized the issue and made a decision more difficult.
