THOUSAND OAKS : Auto Shops Face Ban Near Center

Share

Car repair shops and crematoriums could be prevented from opening near Thousand Oaks’ planned Jungleland development under a zoning change to be considered Tuesday by the City Council.

If the change is approved, the city will establish a special zone on 22 acres of the business district adjoining the city’s planned $63.8-million civic arts plaza. The development is at Conejo School Road and Thousand Oaks Boulevard.

The existing commercial zone allows businesses such as crematoriums, medical labs, auto dealerships and print shops. City planners have proposed changing the zone to prevent similar new businesses from moving into the area.

The change is intended to keep storefronts surrounding the development, where a new City Hall and performing arts center will be built, from becoming home to businesses that are more suited to industrial areas of Thousand Oaks, City Planner S. Haider Alawami said.

That area is already home to some of the oldest businesses in the city, and city officials say the new zone is not intended to force them out.

Only one business, a car repair shop across the street from Jungleland, would fall under the exclusions contained in the new zone. That shop will be allowed to stay, Alawami said.
