Caterpillar Workers Try to Defy Lockout: About 500 United Auto Workers union members in Aurora, Ill., tried to defy Caterpillar Inc.'s lockout and were threatened with arrest and turned away, union leaders said. The action is part of the union’s strategy to qualify about 5,650 locked-out workers in Aurora, East Peoria and Peoria, Ill., for unemployment compensation. Caterpillar spokesman Chuck Smith said company officials met with 30 union leaders for about an hour before the group dispersed. He said he doubted that anyone was threatened with arrest.
