BOOK BRIGADE: The first batch arrives in Orange County today. Soon the county will be inundated with more than 2.5 million new Pacific Bell telephone directories, each between 4 and 5 pounds. But Pac Bell has a new task these days: persuading people to recycle their old books. . . . “We recognize we have a product that contributes to landfills,” spokeswoman Nancy Swasey says. Irvine and Costa Mesa are the first local cities to volunteer to hold their own phone book recycling drives.
