Dmitri Khristich, Alan May and Al Iafrate each scored in a span of 2:43 at Montreal to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 4-2 victory for the Washington Capitals over the Canadiens Monday night in a showdown between two of the NHL’s hottest clubs.

The victory was the fifth in the last six games for the Capitals, the league’s highest-scoring team.

The Canadiens had allowed only 29 goals in their first 19 games but were playing their fourth game in six nights and were without three veteran forwards.

N.Y. Rangers 3, Pittsburgh 1--The Rangers won at New York on Joe Kocur’s controversial tie-breaking goal with 4:15 remaining on a shot that went through the Penguins’ net.

The shot appeared to have missed the goal, but after the Rangers protested, and after consulting with the replay official, referee Terry Gregson allowed the goal to stand.

Kocur’s goal was his first regular-season point as a Ranger since his acquisition from Detroit on March 5.
