Oprah Speaks Out: Oprah Winfrey, decrying a “horrible tide” of child abuse, urged Congress Tuesday to establish a national system of background checks for child-care providers. “When I was abused, I blamed myself,” Winfrey told the Senate Judiciary Committee. “I blamed myself for most of my adult life. You lose your childhood once you’ve been abused.” The television host urged passage of a bill that is aimed at allowing child-care operators to screen potential workers for histories of child abuse or other serious crimes.
