House Abandons Plan to Aid Dairy Farmers: House lawmakers abandoned a controversial bill to increase federal milk subsidies, ending a nearly yearlong drive to boost aid to dairy farmers. The measure, which could have raised consumer milk prices by billions of dollars, was actually skewered by the dairy industry itself after a leading milk producers’ group decided to fight the bill. The National Milk Producers Federation said it was concerned about a special assessment that would have been imposed on dairy farmers.
